US Army PFC Douglas Ray Carpenter was born in Carthage, NY and moved to Rome when he was four years old. He was the son of Harry and Effie Yerdon Carpenter. He had two brothers, Edward and Frederick and one sister, Mrs. Salvatore Page. They lived at Lake Delta.

Douglas attended Rome and Lake Delta Schools. He worked at Teugega Country Club as a caddie before enlisting in the Army in 1950. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rome.
