US Navy Lt. Daniel Olmstead Kern was among 43 others who died in a fire aboard the carrier Oriskany off the coast of Vietnam on October 26, 1966. He was 23 years old.
The Family
US Navy Lt. Daniel Olmstead Kern was from Whitesboro, NY. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Kern. He had one brother, Edward and one sister, Margaret Ann. On December of 1965 Daniel married the former Elizabeth Stanley in California.

US Navy Lt. Daniel Olmstead Kern was a 1961 graduate of Whitesboro Central School. He went on to study at the Academy of Aeronautics in Long Island. While there he was on the Dean’s List for three years, he was the President of the Honor Society and he received a scholarship award from Tau Alpha Phi Fraternity. In 1964 Daniel was appointed a Naval Air Cadet; he completed pre flight training as Cadet Regimental Commander. In November of 1965 Daniel received his wings as a helicopter pilot, a very proud and happy moment for Daniel and his family.
