
USMC LT COL David S. Greene
The History
USMC Lt Col David S. Greene was killed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq on July 28, 2004. At the time of his death, Lt Col Greene was the highest ranking Marine to die in Iraq. He was 39 years old.
The Family
Lt Col Greene grew up in Camden, NY. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roswell Greene of Punta Gorda, Florida. He had a brother, John of California, and two sisters, Donna Perreault of Cary, North Carolina and Karen Evans of Farmington Hills, Michigan. He was married to Sara Bleccker Greene of Shelburne, Vermont. They had two children, Jena and Wesley.

Lt. Col David S. Greene was a Reservist assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 775, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3D Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California. Lt. Greene was the first fatality for Helicopter Light Attack Squadron during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The day Lt. Col Greene was killed his gunship was one of two flying in Anbar Province where there had been numerous insurgency attacks. The helicopter’s co-pilot landed the damaged Cobra. His memorial service was held in the Connecticut church were he and his wife were married in 1989. Lt. Col David S. Greene is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
