USMC PFC Joseph Keith Wheeler

USMC PFC Joseph Keith Wheeler was killed in action in Vietnam on March 31, 1968.  He was 18 years old.

The Family

USMC PFC Joseph Keith Wheeler was from West Utica, NY.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Mary) Wheeler.  He had one brother, Charles and one sister, Karen.

USMC PFC Joseph Keith Wheeler enlisted in the Marines in February of 1967.  During his basic training in South Carolina, he was cited for rifle marksmanship.  He went to Vietnam in December of 1967 as a member of the First Air Wing Command. He was assigned as an airborne machine gunner.  He protected American air convoys bringing troops and supplies to the Marine Base Camp at Khe Sanh.

The attack was intense at Khe Sanh and a call went out for volunteers to relieve Marines.  PFC Wheeler immediately volunteered and with other Marines was airlifted to Khe Sanh where he was killed.  USMC PFC Joseph Keith Wheeler is buried in Crown Hill Memorial Park in Utica.  He is a hero and Freedom Park will never let him be forgotten.
